Nice jump roll but does not look like a Skagit set up and certainly not a "Skagit" style cast.

I am a bit confused....he will never catch anything as he does not leave the fly in the water long enough ;)

Hi All,
          It's a casting demo Rob, silly !!

Technically though , is it a "SPEY Cast" ? There is no change of direction .  :wink  . Just looks like a roll cast to me , can't see much of a jump Ben if I,m being pedantic.

Excellent roll casting technique though    .

Nice one Mike.

Paul.

EMI (excuse my ignorance), but is a jump roll and switch cast the same thing? or am I asking if an elephant is indeed a tiger? :oops

Alan (if I'm wrong)

Iain (if I'm correct)

HI Iain,
No , an elephant is not a tiger . Have a look in SexyLoops.  :z4

Hi Paul,

You can see the disturbance on the water where the line leaves and re-alights on the surface.  The anchor is so nicely set that it is hard to spot.

Hey Paul, just did and they say that this tiger indeed has a trunk.
Over to you - or anyone else.

Mr Sexyloops he say

"Historically the switch cast predates spey casting. Basically the switch cast is exactly the same as the single-spey, but with one small difference: the fly does not kiss the water on the backcast."

BUT then he says

"This said, now the Switch Cast is most commonly used to refer to the Jump or Dynamic Roll. Don't you just love us flycasting instructors?"

So the tiger has a trunk..... sometimes.......... depending on who's talking.

There Ian, hopes that's cleared that up for you.

I believe the quoted historical meaning of the term switch cast to be correct, a single Spey with no anchor.  I do not use the term switch cast as it is confusing, I would call the cast in the clip a jump roll.  I don't use the term forward Spey although I know many are using these days, I teach a Single Spey as a simple jump roll with a change of direction.

Hi Ben,
             I'd go along with that.

Paul.
