Title: Using materials i haven't used before
Post by: James Laraway on 14/05/2020 at 10:53
As with most fly tiers i have loads of 'stuff' i never use.

One such materials is ostrich herl -  I've has some for years but it just 'kicks about'

Yesterday i found a video on youtube where the chap uses it for 'hopper bodies' so thought i would give it a whirl. Its actually really nice and 'scruffy' ( excuse the heads on the flies as i haven't varnished them)

I did the orange version first then as an 'ode to Allan Liddle' i thought i'd try a 'coo dung' version in yellow ( as we all know Allan is obsessed with coo dung flees  :z4 )

James, nice flies. I use ostrich herl a lot on shrimp bodies and free swimming caddis bodies it is an extremely versatile material.
