Sink Tip or Midge Tip

Here's an interesting one ....... Sink Tip and Midge Tip, what's the difference?

I know my thoughts ..... but what are yours, is it the length of the tip, the sink rate, something else, or are they maybe just the same thing  :?

My understanding of the term midge tip is it’s a specific 1’ intermediate tip, where a sink tip is usually 5’ or more and can be of different sink rates

Great stuff, it's gonna be interesting to read everybody's thoughts, as there are often confusing ideas about this one.

Basically what Sandy said apart from the midge tip length, I always thought it was 3'

I think of them as a 'watching' tip and a 'feeling' tip.

So far you are pretty much echoing my thoughts - Midge Tips usually around 3ft, but can be shorter, and Sink Tips somewhere in the 5-15ft range.

There are no hard or fast rules or standards, 'Midge Tips' are more of a UK thing and would usually simply be a short Sink Tip elsewhere. Tip densities or sink rates can vary.

I’m with all of you on this a midge tip to me is short, 3 foot max and I have sunk tip lines from 5 foot all the way up to 15.

A 15ft sink tip? With my casting I'd be as well getting a full linking line 😆

Possibly James, at some stage in the future, but they are not currently in development.

For what its worth - I would prefer a short sink tip of ~ 3'.
As well as a buzzer and nymph line it is good for overcoming the wake caused by the cast connection when pulling a team or lure near to the surface.
