Well, its been a while in coming, but Diamondback have finally released an abbreviated grip and stupidly light reel seat.

I think the theory is that you get more "feel" in the handle, rather than saving weight, hence the name "Link".
The gaps in the cork will allow the rod to flex that tiny bit more and you will feel the corks open and close slightly when you cast. Even with normal cork handles on a soft rod you can "feel the cork" move under you hand, so I can see this enhancing that "link" to what the rod is doing.
Perhaps too much of an "advancement" for the average angler to bother with :)
