I like that a lot. :z16
Last weekend there were clouds of Hawthorn flies in my neck of the woods so that should look tasty to a trout.
I have it in mind to do something similar with black ice dub :wink
:z1

Nicwe flies Iain, perfect for your new 5 sweep :z4
Liking the photography alot :z16

Only problem I can see is the ribbing being knackered by the first trout to take the fly, I had that problem with shipmans till I started using crystal flash (I think) its fine pearly woven round a fine nylon core which stops the fish shredding the rib. From the look of your spiders it will be a problem. :z14

I was speaking to someone the other day about the fine pearl rib on my Shipmans and Big Red dries , the faded lettering on the label says 'Twinkle Krystal Flash' but it's different to yours Rabbitangler it's a hank of single strands of twisted pearl and i think it's about 15 years old.

Loving the photos Iain :z16

Very nice Iain. Have you invested in a mini photo studio? :z14

Never seen Krystal Flash like that, only seen it in hanks. I've had the same issues with flat tinsels over bodies like that.....
Try using less dubbing, twiswing on the the thread looser and wrapping the shank more loosely so when you do wind the rib, it bites down further into the body material. Also stretch the mirage tinsel before winding then wind as tight as you can get it. You may need to go up from small to medium tinsel as the stuff become finer when stretched. Other thing to try would be a counter rib of 10lb(ish) fluoro.
Cheers

Counter rib is good, Not sure if I spelled Crystal flash propely or as per the american way :z4 :z4. could have been twinkle, I'll check out my hank and report back.

Ps I just googled rubber gimp suit's so I could add a "funny" pic but now my eyes are bleeding and I want my mammy. There are some seriously strange people in the world...

You guys are something else :z4
-
:z4 Heading to the Don soon so if i meet someone fishing in a 'Gimp' mask i'll have a fair idea who it is. :z4
Back to the flees. Try either an underbody of black thread and then the tinsel over with the body dubbed very sparse over this (final rib of black thread). This lets the colour 'bleed' through but protects from troot teeth damage too quickly.
Or tie as my Bibio Emerger body: (sparse)
Black seal / rabbit / green glister (choped fine) mix front and rear thirds with scarlet seals fur middle ribbed with black tying thread. This gives the flash required via the glister (green better than pearl by the way) as well as offering a robust tying. Two, sometimes ever three fish :z4 Nah to be honest i wouldn't know as i tend to stick mine in the trees or bushes long before any troot are interested. :z4
BTW the rest o the Bibio Emerger is:
Head Two turns white cock trimmed below (no jokes please :z7)
Hook size 12 to 16 B400 (or fine wire barbless equiv).
Try it as well without the red bit (Simply called the Black and White) or with claret instead of red (Claret bibio). Was up all night thinking the name for that one. :z4
-
The Welsh like to tie bibios with orange rather than the red.
The locals on the Wye and Severn swear by it and it prouduces well on the rivers for both brown and seatrout.
I like the idea of a Claret Bibio Allan :z17 may try tying a couple for my trip North.
The Bard.
-
Do them as Hoppers as well. (Size 12) Heather Flies everywhere up here at the mo and the troot are taking a shine to them.
-
These heather fly things were out and about at Haddo today (see photos). Your Bibios would have worked well I'm sure. I had over a dozen brownies on a Black and Claret Half-Hog/Sedgy/Hopper thing (It was Black with legs and a Claret body! - Mike knows it's real name!).
