Title: Ythan 18/10/2012
Post by: Jim Eddie on 18/10/2012 at 17:22
Well today was my last chance to fish the river this season, was hoping it would be fishable. when I got there it was high but running clear, my optimism was soon shattered as the rain came doon like stair rods. River was soon like drinking chocolate  :cry on my last cast had a  3lb Brownie which is a nice fish for that beat. Hope to catch it again in the trout seaon next year  :wink

Looks well upstream. I would say that was a coloured sea trout rather than a brownie.

You could be correct Graham, its sometimes difficult to tell the difference, Its between Fyfie and Methlick.

Mike higly unlikely it was washed upstream from Ellon  :wink Also its about a mile from the nearest road across some really rough ground. Is there a raft race at Fyvie ?

Hi Jim,

nice pictures   :z16   what did you take your fish on?

I think the bottom picture is the new guideline 'draftdodger' tube.

Same thing really, only difference is the fish's general preferred feeding habits. To end all confusion and, at times, heated debate would it not just be simpler to call them 'sea going browns'?  And, on a slightly different note, why do they have different seasons and different size limits?
That said crackin fish Jim, wouldn't look out of place on the Deveron. Maybe you should fish streamers on this water more often  :wink :z4 :z4

Love the new 'Ron Thomson' two person float tube, not sure the pockets are very watertight though.  :z4 :z4

Had a go on the ythan today, upper beat. Forgot my wading boots so it was waders and wellies which was a bit of a squeeze. First cast hooked and landed a finnoch which was a great start but unfortunately it must have been a fluke as didn't get a touch after that. Met a few guys worming who had tales to tell of salmon into the 20's they had caught and returned recently. Would be some buzz hooking a fish that size in a river the width of a car... Might be digging worms myself next sat morning :z4
I won't, but even before I met those guys I was thinking how perfect the water was for worming tactics. Haven't fished worms in 20 or so years but its how I learnt to fish and in a river similar to the ythan.
By the time I had worked down to the car which prob took an hour and a half my feet were pinching a bit in the wellies and Heineken cup rugby on telly won out.
Still was lovely to be on running water again with the small rod.
