How close to main river can you fish?

If there is a burn running into a main river how near to the main river can you fish the burn without infringing any club/association's fees?

Also at what part do you class as the river(estuary) and what part do you class as the sea where is the imaginary line drawn?

Just depends , often the club / association / riparian owner will have the rights to the burn as well as the main river.

Re sea estuary, you can not fish for migratory fish for a ceratin number of miles either side of a river mouth in Scotland , can't remember the exact distance though.

But if a leaf falls in the forrest can anyone hear it  :z13

Things to consider:

All migratory fish will need written permission to fish for, so fishing on a burn off the main stem for salmon is just the same as fishing the main river. On Donside, fishing for trout on and off the main stem without written permission will cause you problems due to the protection order, Hamish will elaborate i am sure.

Generally fishing rights to an estury include about 3 miles from the mouth and this goes back to the salmon netting permissions / liscenses.

Why dont you just join the club/Association?

Interesting thread.

Even fishing in the sea from the foreshore/beach/rocks etc if you are lucky enough to catch a salmon or sea trout, the fish must either be released or offered to the riparian proprietor. I do not think that there is a legal distance from the river mouth, it varies a fair bit depending on the geography. The riparian proprietors for salmon or sea trout can extend for many miles from the estuary.

But as Jim says  " Can you hear a leaf fall?"
