We've been thinking about having an Outcast Gathering all summer and just never got round to it :z6 everybody has just had so much on this year. Ben and I were thinking of getting together sometime in October, so I'll keep you posted and hopefully a plan will fall in to place :z4

This sounds like a grand idea to me :z16 However only drawback with grass casting here are the snakes and the scorpions.
Mind you you could probably get a good run from a monkey if you bring some mango flies :grin.
I dont know, Crocs in the river, snakes in the grass, scorpions under the rocks, Its not Scotland :shock
At least the rain is warm :z4
Sandy (starting to feel like a real outcast :z10)
-
I'll be there - just name a date. Currently mostly free in October, but that will almost certainly change :roll
-
Hi folks
How does October the 24th or 25th sound :? Or failing that ..... October 31st or November 1st :?
Best wishes

Flyfair is on that weekend, so I may not manage, Kevs talking about going down too so 7th would suit me better

Hi Dave
We are planning to hold the gathering in a playing field in Banff that we sometimes use, but waiting for confirmation that this will be OK on the 1st :wink
Once the venue is confirmed, we will put up more details.
If we can't get confirmation, we'll go for a different venue :wink
Cheers for now

Hi folks
It was proving tricky to track down folk due to the weather, to be able to confirm that Banff was available.
So ....... I have booked the playing fields at Methlick
Methlick should hopefully prove a great venue, there's a shop and pub across the road and unlike most of Aberdeenshire, visitors are welcome and can use the public toilets!
As you come down the road from Oldmeldrum ( having gone past the fishery ) turn left when you reach the Methlick service station T-junction and park anywhere along the main street on the left. The playing fields are on the other side of the road from the Ythanview Hotel, between you and the river Ythan :wink The playing fields do have a small car park, but this is usually pretty busy with folk going to church on a Sunday, so it would perhaps be courteous to not park there.
Let's go for a 10am start and finish at about 3pm :z16
It would be useful if you could reply here to give us an idea of how many folk are coming along, the Outcast Gatherings are very informal and all forum members are welcome to join in the fun!
Best wishes
Mike Barrio
Who is coming along: :?
Magnum Magnus
Ben D
Hamish Young
Mike Barrio
Kevin Muir
Jedi Jim
grhe Paul
Goolager Iain
Hares Lug Irvine
Jay Scott
Caddisfisher Dave
Sightbob Brian
More forum members welcome to come along ....................

Is there any cast, or anything in particular that anybody would like to cover on the day? :z17
Best wishes
Mike
-
Mike
How about the steeple cast and anything else that helps in tight situations.
If anyone wants a lift, I will be travelling up from Dinnet via Kemnay, Inverurie, Oldmeldrum etc. I plant to leave at about 08:40 to get to Methlick for 10.
Cheers
Irvine

Sounds good to me Irvine :z16
Hmmm, who is good at steeple casts etc? We need a volunteer :wink
Best wishes

Mike to we have a plan B coz Sundays weather looks seriously wet?
-
Peter
It's puddle casts if wet. :oops
-
Mike to we have a plan B coz Sundays weather looks seriously wet?
Hmmm, yes, the forecast this morning said "Torrential rain" for Sunday, but it looks like it has changed to "Heavy" now?
Let's keep our fingers crossed, I guess that's all we can do :z6
I can't think of a plan B, any ideas anyone, I guess across the road to the Ythanview for a drink and a blether might be a reasonable plan B :?
Best wishes
Mike

Mike to we have a plan B coz Sundays weather looks seriously wet?
I hate to heap on the misery but the forecast for Sunday also mentions the possibility of severe gales.
Fingers crossed, the depression might travel faster than expected and it might blow through early on Saturday night.
In hope
Irvine

Forecast changed again, now wetter than earlier but with little wind, bring waterproofs and it should be fine
Gort a couple of demos lined up, if there is anything that anyone would like covered please let me know, I am sure Magnus will do something too.
Hamish, Hope you been practicing, got the TCR back (Very nicely re built by Rob) and the Outcast line is flying out with it :grin

Was it really raining that much today? :z6
I was soaked and frozen, but really enjoyed my day :z3

Well, my wee Fiat did a meaningful impression of an amphibious assault craft tonight :shock
That was seriously not any fun at all - but that's tempered by the fact had a good time chucking lines and chewing the fat with everyone and a big thanks to Irvine, nice pint :z18
Hamish :z3
-
Just to echo what has already been said , really enjoyed it despite the weather , would have liked to stay for a pint but was going out tonight to the outlaws for dinner :roll :wink

Oh and thanks to Mike for organising it and to Ben for giving an excellent demo in not the best conditions and to Hamish for being a boulder (you had to be there) :z4

Intersting drive home, this is what I was greeted by, I have a river about 8" deep running past my back door down my drive, across the B977 and down the track towards the river :z10
Will work out the shoot out scores after I have had some food, need to eat before the kitchen is under water :z4

well hi all
thats me just got home to St Cyrus.the time is now 9pm.had to leave my car at Kevs because he cant get near his house then the coast road south of inverbervie is closed so kev dropped me off 2.5 miles from my house and i had to walk the rest.i was starting to get tired wet wading infront of the car
the river bervie becide Kevs house which is normally 8 foot wide is 200 feet wide and thats only where the current stops flowing.havent seen it like that before
I hope everyone got home ok
thanks for the great day even tho its been a damp one
stuart

Glad to hear you got home OK :z16

Hi Ben
Have you caught any fish in the new burn outside your kitchen window yet Ben?
Cheers
Mike
I have caught fish in shallower water than there is in the deep fast run on the far bank by the wall :z4
I have scored the shootout....
Outfits were
a) Sage TCR 590 with Barrio Outcast WF5F line
b) Orvis Western3 107 Protoype with 32' 15.6g floating shooting Head
c) Scierra Ferox 105 with long belliy SShoot WF5F
d) Orvis Helios 966 with Loop Opti Stilwater WF6F line
Results
1. Stuart - 40
1. Ben - 40
3. Hamish - 39
4. Kevin - 32
5. Michael - 27
6. Iain - 26
7. Mike - 15
7. Brian - 15
8. Jim - 13
9. Irvine - 12
10. Jay - 10
Worked out as follows..... 11 casters, longest cast with each rod received 11 points, shortest cast received one point, totals added up
Also worked out the average distance with each outfit.
a) 78.73'
b) 83.68'
c) 87.15'
d) 86.82'
Very interesting, the £75.00 Scierra with £5.00 discontinued line came out top, obviously not totally reliable as the wind was so changeable but it was a nice set up.
Some seriously big casts went out today in appaling conditions, would have been interesting to see what the distances would have ben had we started earlier before the wind picked up, there were a number of high 11x's and a few 120's with the 5wts. Was good to see some new faces and also very good to see some of those I have cast with before, some of whom have obviously been practicing ( nice backcast loops Mike! ).
Thanks to Mike for organising the venue and thanks to everyone who showed up, was a really grim day for it but the turn out made it more than worth the soaking I got :grin
Cheers

hi all
had a few scary moments on the way home to. how come when you come to a huge puddle there is always something coming the other way???
anyway had a good time considering i haven't cast a single hander this year but now the salmon season is over may get a few outings, infact might go out tomorrow weather permitting.
cheers
brian :z16

Yes it was a hairy drive home, even with the 4WD, and on the radio this morning I hear most of the roads I travelled are now closed.
Thanks to Mike and Ben for organising the day and to Ben for some useful advice. I know I have to work on tracking this winter.
At least I didn't score 4 in the shootout. It was interesting so see the big variation in distances with the different rods and how badly I did with an all-out distance outfit.
Hears to the next time

Hi Guys
Just thought id say i had a brilliant day despit the weather,
Might have even finished up with a fish if only i stuck a fly out the back of the clio and trawled home.
Thanks to Irvine for the pint and to Mike and Ben for organising it.
Looking forward to the next one.

Another successfull gathering I thought. Yeah the weather was miserable but it just made me more aware of the fact that I need a good waterproof jacket.
Nice to try a couple of different rods & lines. 5wt Scierra Ferox with s shoot line, Loomis IMX brought back fond memories, Hamish's blunderbuss, to name but a few BUT the soft and gentle feel of loveliness was trying the 9' 4wt Sage SP c/w last generation Wonderline.
The shoot out was fun with lots of grunting and fuss from the lesser techniquers like myself - it's a pride thing.
Mike, I was watching you earlier in the day and your back cast loops were as tight as a drum, even wedge like. I don't know if you were aware of it.
Great to catch up, just a pity that the weather took the edge off of things.

Hi Iain,
This Mike, or "windknot" Mike? ........... If it was me, then why can't I get wedgies on my forward cast :z4
Sunday was awesome by the way, simply down to the great bunch of folk :wink
Best wishes
Mike
-
You Mr B.
The reason I mention it is that watching most 'average' or 'non advanced' shall we say, casters the back cast is generally technically poorer than the forward cast (IMO).
NOW I'm neither classifying you in any casting catagory nor am I going to comment on your forward cast as I was paying very little if any attention to it - just amazed by the back cast.

Because you are hauling and rotating too early and not hauling fast enough :wink
Backcast was looking very nice and also very straight, tracking was impressive. Now those trees have gone (& I trust they have) your backcast can only get better.

Cool ..... thanks for the kind comments Iain, that makes sense cause I usually do things back to front :z4
Maybe we should try doing some video next year, I suspect that most of us would benefit from seeing ourselves casting?
Best wishes

Mike
Any idea when the next one will be? How about having it in Kintore, its not so far for Ben to travel (nothing to do with me living there :z4)
Matt
-
Is there a football (casting) field in Kintore?
Cheers
Ben
-
There is a Football pitch and Cricket pitch there, more than big enough for the event. It's just behind the school.
Matt
-
I think you need to "book" these pitches as they are part of the Community Centre...which is part of the School...if that makes sense....I should be at the school tonight for Pipe Band practice..I will see if anyone knows the score with booking.
Might be a small fee too, but it wont be a lot.
