Ok Iain
I will take the bait (pardon the pun)
Does it catch fish?
-
Yes, they were jumping into the boat after one today. As I recall a determined or very hungry one escaped with it...

And how about a Heather Fly

A couple of intresting flies there Iain!
Heather flee looks nice, is that peacock glister or simmilar under the foam??
Cheers
Baz
-
is that peacock glister or simmilar under the foam
It is peacock glister Baz :z16 I really like the effect it gives and use it quite a bit on Klink thoraxes (or is thori?)
Iain
-
(or is thori?)
nah! thats what JohnR gets when he tries to tie flies :cry
:z4 :z4
Sandy
-
:z4 :z4 :z4
so would the aerowing post be a thight for thori?
Iain
-
Aerowing is mince Iain, cant believe you persuaded me into buying 2 packets of that rubbish!
I just cant get it to work for me :mad
-
Aerowing is mince Iain
:shock what!? what floatant you using Thelma? It needs to be treated but is unsinkable in my opinion
I'll easily take the mince off of your hands. (much cheapness)
Iain

Iain
I'll second that too. Aerowing seems to float much better than any of the other stuff like that I've tried.
-
Aerowing is mince
You mean "Thite" :z4
Learn to thpeek proper like

Iam now a cdc feind!
last couple of months dries have been doing well for me and cdc with some veniards cdc oil appplied to it un sinkable!
Best find for me this season was the cdc oil, sounds like a gimick but it makes a huge difference! :z16
-
screwed up bud............. you should have signed off 'Thandy'
:z7
:oops
:z4 :z4 :z4 :z4
Baz, for the record, i prefer CDC as well :z18
Thandy
-
I'm a convert to aero-wing, although 'ducks arse flees' - that really needs to be said in a Yorkshire accent, guy I used to tie flies for couldn't pronounce Cul De Canard kence 'ducks arse' - still feature in my river box.
Never heard of CDC oil, I wonder how they get that :shock
H :z3
-
Preen glands I would guess Hamish
:z18
Jim
-
Ethel,
I almost bought CDC Oil ages ago but was dubious as to it's ability to really prevent me from having to 'primp' a CDC fly often. :z8
I will give it a go :z16 as I do miss fishing certain CDC flies but on the river when the vegetation is omnipotent and collossal I hate having to regularly strip in all the line to treat the leader or fly as it always velcros' itself to said nuisance :mad :mad
Iain
-
Just netted one of my ducks and tried wringing it out, ended up with a bit of water in the bottom of the bucket but no signs of any oil and the mallard seemed a tad unhappy? :z4
Best wishes
Mike
No harm was done to any animals in this experiment! :shock :z4 :z4 :z4

Mike, did you try it with a girl duck - it might be you're trying to milk a bull :z4 :z4

Hi Mike, I took some other photos last night but as I tried it with the camera on a tripod in fron tof me as I tied I wasn't too happy with the results............It will be done tonight.

Sandy

Very nice Sandy.
The bodies look nice (esp. the pink shrimp) what is it?

Iain

Surprisingly, its Shrimp pink :z7 krystal flash over shrimp pink thread :z4 :z4 :z4
The flies have had a haircut now on the advice of those that know
And they are going to get sparser too :shock
Cool
Sandy
-
Aherm! and the crushed barb question????
???
Iain
-
Aherm! and the crushed barb question????
???
Iain
Do i really need to answer that one :z8
Why does one crush a barb ???
I still return my fish, just cos they are saltwater fish doesn't mean they deserve any less respect :z3
Sandy
-
Do i really need to answer that one
Sandy I'm a martyr to my Arthur Ritus so wouldn't write unneccessarily.
I was wondering if some species that you were targeting had hard mouths and the debarbed hooks were for better penetration. :z8
I'm aware of the catch and release aspect of debarbed hooks so am now considering the fact that if you spend possibly a lot of money and I'd imagine a lot of physical effort SWFF'g then surely the last thing you want is to lose a fish - I'm going to show my ignorance here and say that most sea fish that I've caught in the past have what looks like relatively large 'hardy' mouths and wonder if , though commendable, barbless hooks are worth the worry?
worry may not be the best word but I think you'll get my drift.
I'm assuming the majority of Pike, Salmon and Sea-Trout fly fishers, for example, have a healthy respect for the quarry but are loathed to go barbless for that very reason.
Iain
-
Sorry Iain
I still don't see why the species, size or costs involved should
make me resort to barbed hooks. Barbless makes for quicker unhooking,
so the fish can be returned whilst in the water. It also makes taking a hook out of your hand
much easier and should I get snapped there is a far greater chance of the fish shedding a barbless hook.
So what if I don't get them all in, the take is the buzz along with that initial blistering run.
I might take the odd trophy photo, but only as a personal record of either a new species or a specimen.
I have fished barbless for everything for the last 10 years, and so it will continue. :z12
now you have made me sound like a preacher :roll I hope you are happy with my response.
No special reasons, just good fishing.
Sandy
-
Jeez!
curiosity killed the cod cat. :z13
Iain
-
I'm on to Polar Candies now, or variations there-of.
Its taken me ages to figure out how to get them looking right
But patience is everything, it seems. I'm happy with them now.
Not de-barbed yet, specially for Iain :z4

A green highlander templedog styleee
(http://i55.tinypic.com/1213hv7.jpg)
a silver doctor templedog stylee I didn't have any long brown fur though. I need to find something thats more like mallard colour for the longest wing.
cheers
matt :z15
-
Matt,
Try lakeland flytying, midgar temple hair is about the best thing I know of now dog hair has become more or less impossible to get. Veniard do a 3x long arctic fox which is good but midgar has the edge, reflected in the price but it is still good value for the quality of hair you get.
Cheers
Ben
-
thanks Ben, I'll hav a look out for that.
-
A gold bodied Willie Gunn dog thingy.
I did forget to put any flash in the wing though :oops

Hi Matt,
Nice tubes as usual.........................gonna catch something on them?
Sandy,
Leave the barbs on the Polar Candies, works better :z7
Iain
-
Nice tubes as usual.........................gonna catch something on them?
Iain it's a well known fact that my tubes are fated to catch nothing.... :cry :cry
-
First of all apologies for quality of picture I'll try and get a better camera :oops
This is my first real attempt at a fully dressed salmon fly. God they take time???
May be my only attempt!! :z4 :z4
-
Cool :z16
Looks nice Peter :z3
Cheers
Mike
-
Thats an awesome looking fly Peter. Looks like alot of work has gone into it. :z16 I have seen alot of these in display cases etc. Do many people still fish with this style? Does it have the same following as eg, the guys that only fish cane rods?
I always find it amazing in this sport how things go in and out of fashion.
Cheers
Paul
-
I think there may be some who use fully dressed flies to fish with :shock but that fly took me about 20 hours over around 2 months to tie :z19 :z19. The real cost is in materials and I simply couldn't afford that investment to get chewed up casting, never mind a fish. Moving the fly quickly or touching the wing will bugger up the set of the feathers so this one is for display purposes only.
-
I used to buy them from a guy in Spain and fish them, very effective they were too :wink
Can't remember his name, must put some thought in to that, I think it was somebody Martinez.
Cheers
Mike

Heading out on the Don tomorrow so thought i would sit at the vice and see if i was inspired. I have been messing about with cascade style flies in various colours. Heres a few fresh off the vice. :z16 Go easy :z7
The flash in the wing/tail of this one is pearl UV enhancer. I really liked the effect. Stole/borrowed the idea of adding it to salmon patterns from a wee fly i was shown on the Tay called a "pert shrimp" Must have originated on the Esk.

I am really struggling with hackles at the moment. I am tying them in at the tip and trying to judge the length but its frustrating the hell out me! I am using the veniards packets of hackles. Would it make a huge difference if i invested in some capes? orange/red/yellow/black??
Any advice appreciated
Paul
-
Nice flees Paul, i recently binned what i had left of packets of hackles! If i had one word to sum them up it would be, pish :z4
Capes are worth every penny IMO :z18
-
Very nice paul.
I got a black cock cape from veniards for a few pounds off of Doug and flymakers. worth every penny. I'm going to get a few different colours soon.
-
Had some success with the flies today. :z16 Posted in the Don reports forum. I am definately going to get some decent capes for this kind of pattern. :z18

Playing with Prawn/Shrimp flies.
Trying to get them to look natural!!

Kinda works visually, wonder what the fish will make of it.

Iain
I tried this style of Dry many years ago, they cast and sit really nicely, but i had lots of problems hooking fish with them,
loads of takes but very few hook-ups.
I put it down to the position of the hackle, the trout feel the spikes and reject the fly before it gets into their mouth.
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with them, i could have just been me!!! :z6
Cheers
Sandy
-
Iain,
Your fly looks very similar to the reversed parachute dry flies tied by Roy Christie, however Roy’s flies do not have a wing post. I have only briefly tried these flies with no success so cannot comment on their hooking abilities, I do know that they are quite a lot of people who have a lot of confidence in these flies. Perhaps the omission of the wing post makes a difference.

Hi Baz,

After about 25 attempts I think i am getting there. Thanks for the tip on using half white and half pink Aerowing Ben. These should be pretty visible. Comments on a postcard please....... :wink

A ok John :z16
Baz, look what you've started with the alfresco photo's featuring some form of tree limb...................how very artistic lovies
Joh,n a nice thin blue flat tinsel rib or thin holographic rib would give other good variations of that fly.
Iain
-
Thanks Guys.
I will give them both a shot. I tied a dozen of them today for the clyde forum secret santa fly swap.
Do you think a fly swap would work here?
