General query really.
I plan on going there this Thursday with "soundmixer" but have never fished Lintrathen in my puff - any good :?
Any hints/tips/suggestions of how/where to fish :?
Might go to Backwater, but fancy a day drifting so Lintrathen more likely :wink
-
Hamish,
I have fished there twice with my brother - on the first occasion it was only stocked with browns and we had several small ones plus a few perch. On the second occasion they had started to stock rainbows and the man at the boathouse told us that they had put in 2000 the week before! Unfotunately it was blowing a "hooley" with a buffeting wind coming out of the North-West and we never saw one fish move on the surface. I ended up with one under-size brown and a near case of sea-sickness. If you do encounter a windy day, there are several bays which you might try and a sheltered area at the bottom of the loch which appears to be seperated with a wall of some description. If I can get hold of my brother, I will try to add more information before Thursday.
All the best.

hows it going?
i use to fish it all the time but havent been there for two years.the rodes, the road store, the river mouth, the little bay straight across for the boat house, and the little bit which is closed in down the far end were the best bits to try
flys- bibo, claret pennel, red tailed blae and black were moslty my fish catchers
it was a lot better fishery before they put the rainbows in
let me know how you got on
stuart :z12
-
sound advice Stuart, I think the little loch will be closed off because of the water height, but its worth a look. Evenings were usually good when I fished it, a number of years ago it must be said, with a rise, sometimes of biblical proportions, down near the rhodedendrons to the left as you look from the boat dock. Dries such as CDCs, shipmans etc worked too, as did various 'lures' - you know the type.
-
Crap conditions today - bloody cold as well :z10 - but we managed plenty of brownies to about 3/4lb and moved far bigger trout. Took home a rainbow each best just under 3lb and it went very very well indeed.
'Bows took claret bumble and claret sedgehog - browns took "typical loch patterns" :z16
Will definately go back, it's a nice water and worth the visit :z3
-
Had my second visit to Lintrathen last week and much warmer than last time but still tricky conditions - wind was damn fickle - sport was slow with only the occasional fish showing but loads of fish coming short. Chopping and changing fly size/depth/speed made liitle difference so as I had taken the 'whole' armoury with me I tried out a superfast sink and white lures to see if anything would have a go...... result was plenty of Perch to about 1lb and one Brownie about 1lb on the sinker.
But no 'bows.
After lunch the conditions were ideal and I switched back to a floater and loch patterns, hard going (even the brownies) but managed a brace of 'bows for 5 1/2lb, one belting overwintered fish about 3lb which took my favourite 'adapted' claret bumble and had me into the backing more than once :shock
Euan :z1 sadly wasn't blessed with the same fortune as I, but as he lives considerably more local to Lintrathen than I do it's likely he'll be back again soon to get some practice in to show me up next time :z4
Nice to get out onto a 'big' loch and fish 'loch' style, so much so that I thought a wee forum outing might be a plan :?
Anyone interested :? Plenty of boats available and £45 for 2 rods fishing 10am-5pm with a bag limit of ten in the boat isn't too bad.
Can't say when exactly, but I'd like to go back again before seasons close.
-
The aerator (centrally situated in the main loch) is a good place to find fish. And on one outing two years ago, my boat partner and I fished the small loch and as I was pulling in a three-inch perch which had seized my nymph, a fish of around five pounds made a massive lunge at it. So I tossed the poor wee perch back into the general area (still attached!) and the monster tore into it once again.
I put this big fish down to a pike until I learned on my return to the jetty that there were.........no pike at all at Lintrathen! So :z17 the muckle trout may still be cruising about that secondary loch yet! Good luck.
-
Haven't yet made it to the 'wee' loch, have seen it from the road, must make an effort to try it next time I'm there :z16
Aerator was turned off when we were there last, but the chap at the boathouse did mention it was a good spot.
I did have something wrench at one of the lures but didn't see a thing so no idea how big it was, have been told they do get some really good Brownies there so maybe..........
-
Aye I'd be up for a wee stravaig down to Lintrathen , work family etc permitting

Jim

Lucky you, PM sent ;)
This sounds like its going to be a great trip. Totally bumed that I cant make it, Will have to arrange another outing!!! Maybe a Haddo meet in Oct?

Bu**er!,
it's just been confirmed that my club has an outing at Dalgety on that date - if it's not one thing it's another.
Tight lines one and all

Mike B
Hamish
Spiderman & 'little me'
Jedi
GRHE
Soundmixer
Moffty
An Chuileog
Rabbitangler
Bri
Clark (lift needed...)
As Mr B might say "cool". For what it's worth, bring a lifejacket (a requirement, although I believe they have available) and waterproofs :wink Anyone with a drogue would be wise to bring it :z17

i am in balmedie but i will be happy to meet in town some where :grin that is if that would be ok :grin

Clark
If Mr B and Bri are sharing then we'll pick you up in balmedie on the way through.

dont know if theres any spaces left but if there is myslef and kev muir would love to come along
thanks
stuart :z12
Working on the assumption that there's going to be no problem booking the number of boats we need then space is pretty much unlimited :!
I'll bung you and Kev on the list :z18 Which now reads:
Mike B
Hamish
Spiderman & 'little me'
Jedi
GRHE
Soundmixer
Moffty
An Chuileog
Rabbitangler
Bri
Pbibio
Kev Muir
Ben Dixon
Baz
That's 7 boats already
-
Iam free on that date if there is any space left!
-
Consider yourself on the list there Baz
I actually called Lintrathen today.... just to be safe.... and have reserved 6 boats with the possibility of another 2.
No problemo if we end up needing more :wink
As we're coming as a 'sort of' club (fishingthefly forum) we get the preferential rate of £36 per boat :wink
I suspect the easiest thing on the day will be to pass the necessary folding to me and I'll deal with the fiscal side of things.
I suggest we all meet up at the carpark before going down to the lodge, if we can all be at the carpark for 09:30 that'd be ideal :z16 As I think we get to fish from 10:00 to 17:00 - that's to be confirmed.
The only thing I'd like to see organised before the day is who fishes with who. More specifically those with boat handling experience (with outboards) matched up to a fishing partner who doesn't have that experience :z17 Should make the day all-together more enjoyable that way  I suspect that 2 anglers per boat is best, although they say you can have three in a boat I think 2 is more 'comfortable'.
This could be the biggest forum gathering away from Haddo...... jings :shock
We need one more angler to make that 8 boats.......
-
We need one more angler to make that 8 boats.......
Maybe not...Im still not a definite and looking less likely each day :cry
Will have a definite answer by fridays cutoff
-

At this timer of yearn it used to be 9.30 till dark, the evening session being too short, but that could have changed.
-
Thanks Hamish, Iam driving from Montrose if anyone would like a lift!
-
Stick me down! I'll be driving from Mintlaw!
*edit* if anyone needs a lift!
-
thanks hamish
does anyone know how the lock is fishing?
stuart :z12
-
2 people per boat sounds like a good plan and you could even change the boat pairings after a lunch break to let the members meet other anglers and check out other tactics :z4 , just an idea!
-
Hi Hamish
Yes, 2 per boat is much better ( and safer ) and your point regarding boat experience is spot on :z16
I have a wee bit of boat experience :z7 and will pair up with Brian
Thanks for doing all the footwork by the way! :z2
Drogues could be tricky? ..... Do they not supply them?
Cheers
Mike
-
It's actually a pity they don't allow tubing cos this could have been the mother of all tubing days :z4
-
Drogues could be tricky? ..... Do they not supply them?
Sadly not, it would be a useful addition to their fleet but I can see why they wouldn't want to provide them.
Easy to make though, also cheap enough to buy :z16
It's actually a pity they don't allow tubing cos this could have been the mother of all tubing days :z4
Yup, use the boats as 'taxis' and paddle around a bit. Faniced trying that on Watten this year but, sadly, will have to wait until '09 :z6
-
Ross
Daniel and I are going from Crichie, if you like we can pick you up in Mintlaw :z16
Easier for us to pick you up probably.
Sandy
-
Hi Stuart,
"does anyone know how the lock is fishing? " .
You need to have the key :wink
Any "locals" help out here ? Peter ?
Mike , I have a drogue. who else ? and we can hopefully ensure everyone has , so that it will be a day of flat calm and blazing sunshine ! :grin
paul.
-
Any "locals" help out here ? Peter ?
Sorry Paul aint fished it in ages, but there should be plenty water so round the edges may be good, the Rhodies are usually worth a chuck - maybe even the little loch ???
-
Hi Pete,
It's a wee while since I fished there too . :roll
Stuart , I guess it's a case of suck it and see how it is on the day.
I suppose that it's like most big places it's big enough that nowhere is "off" all of the time ,so , and I lke this , you just have to watch , read the conditions , ring the changes , etc. etc. and keep trying .
Cue , Paul's blank ........... :oops
Hope not though !
Looking forward to see you there Pete .
Paul.
-
Have they got a website? ....... Can't see one on google :z6
Mind you, google can get a bit "fuzzy" without me glasses :z4
Cheers
Mike
-
The only thing I can find is the link I posted previously in this thread, which surprises me really as it's a good venue and I'd have thought it warranted a better webpage :?
What it will be like later this month I can only speculate but my last couple of outings have shown that 'loch style' with conventional loch patterns is the way to go - which is nice  However that could change and it's nice to have to chop and change tactics/depths/think about things to get results
There are substantial shallows throughout the loch so fish can be caught all over :z16 Let's wait and see what we get on the day :z3
-
After much juggling of commitments i still cant say i will definately be able to make it so best count me out :cry
Noel.
-
OK - so I will be calling them later today..... the list is going to be:
Mike B
Hamish
Spiderman & 'little me'
Jedi
GRHE
Soundmixer
Moffty
Rabbitangler
Bri
Pbibio
Kev Muir
Ben Dixon
Baz
Ross
Ideally we need just one more to make 8 boats..... anyone :?
-
Seven boats have now been booked for the 20th :z3
I don't believe we will have any difficulty in getting another boat if needed :wink
Start time is officially 10am, but if we can all meet at the carpark by 09:30 then we can get going sharpish like :z16
I'm looking forward to this
-
Here is the latest report from the Brechin Anglling Club last Saturday , no doubt we won't get these conditions :wink
"Brechin Angling Club held its 125 competition on Lintrathen Loch on Saturday evening and seldom in recent times has so much pleasure been enjoyed on a club outing.
They arrived to find light cloud and light winds casting a perfect ripple over the loch and Laurencekirk Angling Club members coming off the water with tales of limit bags and free-rising fish.
This was just how we found it and there seemed to be no particular fly which was doing the business and indeed everyone seemed to have done well on their own favourites.
Winner with a limit bag of six fish was Ron Gray who also had the best fish of the competition at just over five pounds.
I myself got a lesson from last year's winner, Ken Craig, who also had his limit crowned with a very good trout of just over three pounds.
Ken was fishing with his favourite fly, the Sweeney Todd, which took four of his fish, the final two on the Kingennie Green Pea, My success was on the Diawl Bach size 12.
It is good to see Lintrathen fishing so well, but there is a certain sadness to note just how few Brownies were weighed in.
It was such a delightful brown trout fishery, but such are the demands of the present day angler that they demand more and larger fish and therefore the rainbow is back in town, or should I say Lintrathen but I guess I still have Loch Lee.
One criticism… Lintrathen Angling Club – you need to do something about the condition of your boats and motors.
Your charges are high and surely some money needs spent on the comfort of your customers, I heard many a criticism over the evening and apparently this is the opinion of many of my fellow anglers. Over to you."
:z18

Cheers Jim,
"the Sweeney Todd, which took four of his fish, the final two on the Kingennie Green Pea"
Looks like we'll have to go traditional then ! :wink

What are the boat pairings looking like Hamish?
-
To be confirmed - if those who know what they're doing with a boat and outboard would like to put their names up that would make pairing off nice and easy :?
-
If anyone requires to borrow a drogue for the day then give me a shout.
It's a wychwood drogue that has yet to be used so there is no swivel/ clip on it at present but that can be easily remedied.

ive just been reading through this topic and salar35 was told there was no pike in the lock
i was fishing it 3 or 4 years ago on a very clear bright day with a friend and the trout fishing wasnt that good so we decide to stop for lunch.we took the boat to the road shore side of the loch but before we hit land about ten feet from the bank in very shallow water there was a pike just sitting there.
i know it was a pike because i had a few casts and it broke me at the boat after about a ten min fight.the fish was about 8lb
ive also hooked a couple of big fish down deep when fishing big flys which stayed on for a few seconds before they broke 8lb leader.i have always put them down to pike
have always thought about using a 3 or 4 inch perch fly on the point but always forget to that them but not this time

I unfortunately cant make this trip as I,m on duty!! How ever I,have been known to catch the odd trout or six from lintrathen. My guide for what its worth goes like this. From the harbour go left to the bay by the rhoddies, you get fish right along this shore up to about 90yds out, good buzzer water. Its not a bad drift along the shore from the rhods down to the first bay, here there are the remains of a sunken cottage. A few drifts int the island are worth ago, quite deep water (comparitivly) so sinking lines wrk. Behind the island there is a channel that is the old river bed, this runs up past the bird hide. The bay between the tip of the island and the bird hide is worth a shot which ever way the wind's blowing. From the tip of the island right down to the slipway there is a drop off if you can drift along it you should find fish. From the slipway (sawmill) to the dyke is good water there were afew fish there last week. The little loch is not worth bothering about at the moment too much weed. From the gap in the dyke out is decent water. Try drifting out from the corner where the new hide is. You can pick fish up right up to the corner by the small dam. In recent times the midle of the loch has produced fish, this is due to the oxygen system, this is marked by bouys, give it a go even if the things are not on. Be ready to go on the drys early, as soon as you see a fish. Watch the rises cause there are one or two wee brownies in the place, but dont be deceived some of the rainbows make the smallest of dimples. Try dbs and nymphs ,snatchers go well, if you want perch a white lure on an intermediate is alost certain to produce. Have a good day and I,will try and make the next one, how about rescobie?. any one needing more info just ask. jim
-
:z18 Jim
Never fished Lintrathen before, should all the advice is well appreciated.
I guess if there is perch in there, i'm going to have a problem with my boat partner :roll
Sandy
-
Just remember you cant throw him in!! ground baiting is not allowed :z13 :z13 jim
-
Hi Jim :z16
Thanks for the tips, I'm sure we'll all find them useful
Pity you can't make it this time ........ but I guess that gives us an excuse to think about putting together another outing :wink
Best wishes

Sadly one more revision, Ben D can't make it due to a staffing shortage on the day :z10

Hi All,
Here is a link to the Bathymetry (depth contours to you and me ) of the Loch of Lintrathen which folks might find useful . The link is actually to a long list of Scottish waters ,scroll down the list to find Lintrathen .
Interesting reading ,whether you intend to plumb the depths or caress the shallows. ::)

Paul.
PS: Coupled with Jim's excellent tips we are all set . Looking forward to it.

Hi Josh
Welcome to the forum :z16
I think that should be OK ....... but you'll have to wait for Hamish to confirm as he is "in charge" of this outing :wink
Not sure why your avatar is not working? It could be that your bebo account where you host the image has restricted access? I have just changed the forum structure so that you can upload your avatar directly on to the forum ( max 120 pixels wide ) so please feel free to try this out if you like.
Best wishes

Everyone get excited!
Lintrathen was awesome today!
First time i had fished it and managed 2 perch , 3 bows and a char of a lifetime that took a good ten mins to get in.
My boat partner also did well with 1 bow and a wee brown.
All fish were taken from within 20ft from the bank on floaters and midge tips.
Pictures to follow as the char had teeth to scare off a pike lol :shock
-
Yes the day was verry good even tho i only had one bow, and was well and truly showen up by Baz with his awsome char....what a fight :shock :shock cant wait for sat :z4
-
Lookin' forward to the photo of the Char :z15- result!

Nice to meet a few new faces today, thanks to all who turned out to the first real forum outing in a while
Couldn't really have asked for better conditions in late september, all in great fun :z18 I think we all had a "grand day out" :z16
Jim won the day with 3 nice troots and I think everyone connected with trout and the occasional perch - so no-one blanked really :z15
Shame we were 3 short on the day, but I'm sure personal circumstance dictated that was inevitable.
Neglected to get fresh batteries for my camera, so I hope some of you guys took some pics on the water :?
I hope we'll all manage a return trip, perhaps with a few more members, for a forum outing (or two maybe :?) next year :z18
Cheers :z18
Hamish :z3
