Salmon on the Dee...
« on: 26/02/2009 at 08:56 »
..was speaking to a couple of Dee ghillies last night at band practice and we got onto the subject of recent catches. Seems to be a fair few big fish comming off but what was more significant was the capture of a Kelt at 62" long!!!! Another of 54" was also taken (both the middle Dee). Thats HUGE..What would that have weighed in pristine condition?

Also, there have been some very large carcases washed up from spawning. Quite a few have been estimated at over 30 pounds.

What happened in the past to produce so many big fish this year and the end of last?

What will this years high waters produce next year and in the future? Presumably the high water means more kelts getting back to sea? but parr being washed away too?

Nice one Baz,
great coming from someone who thought that a paradiddle was the result of the fear of skydiving!

I worked with a guy who (I think) was either in or was practicing with a pipe band & he gave me a few lessons - I used to be able to do a reasonable drum roll.

I'm still trying to master the guitar but as you know you need to practice, practice, practice and all my 'capering' time is spend around fishing.

sorry to hijack the Dee Salmon post

was the 62" Kelt verified?

Oh yes. Two ghillies verified and measured it. What was a little strange was that they said "it did not count as it was a kelt"..still a fish to me..but that also brings into question the US way of doing things, ie, measuring a fish. A 62" kelt is going to be considerably lighter than a 62" springer. Would both fish be worthy of the same merit?

Rob

At 8" longer than Miss Georgina Ballantine's record 64lb Tay salmon, this fish must have weighed 80lb plus when it entered the river.

Did they manage to get a picture?
