"Smile please!" …... What are all these anglers doing drinking whisky at nine in the morning?

Preparing for the march down to the River Don to celebrate the opening of the new fishing season of course!

This traditional event takes place in Inverurie on the first Saturday of the salmon fishing season on the Don.

All anglers are welcome to attend the event which is hosted by Inverurie Angling Association.

Anglers meet at the Kintore Arms Hotel in Inverurie at 9am.

At 9.30am the March to the River Don is led down to the Old Don Bridge to the sound of traditional bagpipes.

And on arrival at the banks of the river.

A few words of wisdom and prayer in an effort to help us catch the odd fish in the coming season.

A few drops of whisky poured into the river for the fish to savour and keep up their strength.

The salmon season is then pronounced open and all can attempt to land their first fish.

The salmon season on the River Don opens on February 11th and closes on October 31st.

Trout anglers also attend this event, but the trout fishing season does not open until April the 1st and closes on September the 30th.
