Trip to Scotland Next Year
« on: 14/09/2009 at 19:41 »
Hey guys,

I just joined the forum today, and I have a couple questions, which are explained below:

My Dad has put together a golf trip to Scotland next year for him, my brother, and me - trip of a lifetime.  I am looking forward to the golf, but I'm more interested in sneaking off a couple evenings to cast a fly - if it's possible.

We will be in Nairn, St. Andrews, and Turnberry - each for two-three nights.

My first question is:  Are there streams near these areas to fish?  I've tried to find some on internet maps, but I can't find a map that shows waterways.

Second question:  Can someone give me a link for fishing licenses on-line, or should I just pick one up when I'm there?

I look forward to hearing something back, and I truly appreciate it!

Not sure about St Andrews and Turnberry but there is Salmon and Sea Trout fishing to be had on the river Nairn , It will all depend on rianfall / water levels if you are to get good fishing.

link gives you permit deatils.

This is also a good site for information http://www.fishpal.com/Scotland/index.asp?dom=Scotland

Saint Andrews is not know for its rivers , but you are not far from Loch Leven which is Scotlands most famous trout lake , Leven trout have been used to populate many rivers worldwide.
Can be difficult on its day , but if you get lucky  :z12

Jim:

Thanks for all this great info!  I will start researching immediately!  Never too early to start...

I figure if I'm going to play golf at the "soul of golf," I need to catch some trout at the "soul of trout," also!

Thanks,
Mark

The River Eden which flows near St Andrews is a salmon/sea trout river but is very tricky to fish. Local knowledge is at a premium on that one.

What time of year will you be over. Bear in mind that the Open is at St Andrews next year and you will struggle to get near the place then.

Hi Creeknut
St Andrews and Turnberry are not the best places to fish but you can try these sites they should be able to give you some good info
www.fishayrshire.co.uk
www.salmonfishingforum.com
www.maximized.co.uk/fifeguide/fishing/river
Nairn on the other hand has some very good fishing roundabout the Findhorn at Forres about 10 miles
www.forres-angling.net
the Ness at Inverness about 17 miles
www.invernessanglingclub.co.uk
and probably one of the best association waters in Scotland the Spey at Grantown on Spey about 24 miles
