Personally ...... I like the packaging that I use at the moment and to be totally honest, I have never liked buying fly lines in plastic bags.

But I will put some thought in to alternative packaging.

A cardboard box is a damn sight more ecofreindly than a plastic bag! Keep the box! :) You could even get the wee "recyclable" logo put on it :) The line can sit coiled in the box without a spool or plastic bag if need be. :)

That sounds the perfect answer to me, re-cyclable cardboard box, those with a line winder can then use as they normally would & re-cycle the box - Those without can use the P & J method & re-cycle the box.
