Title: Winter Outcast Gathering?
Post by: Mike Barrio on 18/12/2008 at 18:59
Hmmm ...... I'm getting some keen interest in an Outcasts Gathering before March :shock

Our weather is never going to make planning something in January or February easy, so what do you fancy folks?
We could try a session on grass and wrap up to keep out the cold ...... or I could look at the cost of hiring a sports centre hall for about 4 hrs ( which would be a lot warmer ) I think a hall would probably work out at approx Ģ10 to Ģ12 per head :z3

What do you fancy?
Cheers

Yeah, I'm in

if it's inside can we have the floor polished so that my line can land then slide a few more yards?

Slick the line with teflon:z4 :z4 :z4

Count me in, quite fancy indoors, it means we can set a date and not worry about the weather.
If we pick a few things to practice like TRACKING  :z4 and perhaps a few of the presentation casts, then there is no reason why indoors would not be ideal.
I might try to learn how to help teach some of them too :roll so i might be of some use this time

Hi Mike

Never really had a chance to cast any distance indoors - great idea - I'm in.

Great stuff

I'll look in to it a bit more next week. The sports centre has quite reasonable height, but I'll try to find out more about the length and if they are ok with our sport.

I think 4 hrs would be about right, but if folk think this is too long, we could try 3 hrs?

Best wishes
Mike

I think 4 hours would be fine, that gives you a chance to have a bit of a gossipa nd try other rods etc.

Hi Peter :z16

I haven't tried casting indoors before ........ what do you think the height needs to be (to the lowest light rather than ceiling I guess) a minimum of 20 ft, 25 ft, or maybe even 30 ft?

Anyone got any idea how high the roof is in Inverurie sports centre?

And.....  Does anyone want to suggest a date, quite looking forward to this as the weather has been far from ideal for any practice as late?

Cheers

Happy with most dates but personally I would be grateful if you could avoid the third Sunday of the month. That's our archaeological group day. But obviously you have to choose a day that suits the majority.

Looking forward to it :z18

Hi Ben

I didn't get a chance to measure the hall, but size is approx 4 basketball courts set up side by side and height is good. I'll try to check it out next week.

Maybe you and Peter "rabbitangler" could speak via PMs and come up with a couple of easy games with hoops etc for the day if you like? That might be good fun :wink

Hall should be fine as long as Aberdeenshire basketball courts conform to the usual dimensions.

Got this info

Length of a basketball court
94 feet (1128 inches)
Note: Many high school and college courts are 84 feet.

Width of a basketball court
50 feet (600 inches)

The Garioch Sports Centre in Inverurie is booked and paid for :wink

As long as the current 12 folk turn up on the day, the cost per person will be Ģ11 ( this would go up on the day by approx Ģ1 for each person that does not turn up / or will come down by approx Ģ1 for each person that increases our numbers above 12 )

Hi folks
Not long to go now ....... cool :z16

For those that haven't been there before, the Garioch Sports Centre in Inverurie is easy to find. Coming off the roundabout in to Inverurie at the top end of the A96, you'll pass the police station on your right and have Morrisons supermarket on your left, when you reach the next roundabout the first exit goes in to morrisons and the petrol station, take the second exit which goes in to Burghmuir Drive and the sports centre is a couple of hundred yards on your right. Opposite the old I&K Motors site (which they now use for servicing) and the Strathburn Hotel. The sports centre has a website at http://www.gariochsports.co.uk/ (http://www.gariochsports.co.uk/)

As per the last Outcasts Gathering, please do not bring all your tackle with you ..... we do not want anybody losing/dropping flies or hooks in an area that other folk will be using! Just bring rods and lines that you would like to try on the day, plus leader material and some wool to tie on the end :wink

It would be nice to get some videos, if you have digital camcorders?

Peter and Ben, have you guys thought about a couple of games we can try, with the hoops etc?

I'm looking forward to Saturday
Cheers

I hadn't thought about that Peter, I was thinking about the hoops simply being on the floor for some reason :roll

If I get a chance over the next couple of days I'll nip in and ask them. Are any of the games easier to set up on a floor rather than hanging hoops? I can't remember :oops

Mike,
I'd like to expand on /re-assess my double haul so that I can try and work on my tracking, casting arc, timing, drift and carry (for a start :z4). That said, anything is going to welcomed - new casts, trick or otherwise, accuracy stuff.......anything.

the last time I was fishing I found myself throwing some tailing loops. so someone to look at that would be cool. Also wouldnt mind being taught some special casting for limited casting areas. Like the loopy thing magnus showed us. anyhting like that, I remember he did some cobra thing also!

Mmmm.. easier  ?  :wink

But I take your point . We are going to be casting in stiller air .
That will probably be different to a normal day in Scotland , ( as not blowing a frackin hoolie ) , note the BG language there. Sci-fi speak .
Battlestar ? Sorry for the non BG freaks.

Anyway , I do think it will let us concentrate on things like tracking , funny casts , and probably most of all allow us to see more exactly what our lines do as a result of what we do.

Not that most days in Scotland are not windy .

We know they are .

So the themes that I would like are - specific casts (including innovative ones ) for specific situations .

Paul.

Not going to be a stick in the mud,  promise, but you may find that distances are not as great indoors as out.  It is like casting on a flat calm day, for some reason the resistance on the line is greater in still air.  I remember Richard Walker writing about it in a book , he called it "hitting the wall".     jim

Yeah,

my thoughts were with the effect of casting in 'artificial' still air and the fact that there will be no hiding place for poor technique - so I'm FRACKIN KNICKERED (non BG terminology Paul), but if looking s***e helps to pin point therefore repair problems then it's win win.

I think I'm with Jim on the fact that distances will be reduced - for the mortals anyway.

Hi Cam,
"probably most of all allow us to see more exactly what our lines do as a result of what we do.  "

Nothing to do with distance necessarily . That was my point .  :z4

To my knowledge, distances will be reduced, I will be interested to see by how much.  Over the last few weeks, conditions outdoors have been perfect, cold crisp air, slight breeze if any at all, in Scotland how often does that happen and for weeks at a time?!!  Probably just means that, as of 15th March when the season starts, the weather will be sh**e for a month :roll

Bring on tomorrow  :grin

You won't be able to find out by how much Ben ..... the hall is probably too small :wink

Looking forward to tomorrow. Would indoors be perfect for the short line snake and roll control that Cammy is keen to learn? I know some of the others would like this too.

The casting games were fun, (thanks Peter & Kevin) and highlighted a couple of things for me. Firstly, it is a good few years since I've even attempted to cast with my left hand :z6 the last time I tried it, I gave up very quickly :cry Today, I found the timing and tracking with my left arm reasonably easy ...... it was the holding & gripping of the rod with my left hand that I struggled with :z3 One to work on perhaps, as I can see a lot of advantages in being able to cast with both hands, especially on the river.

Secondly, I realised that I'm not comfortable with obstacles and snags behind me and these make me lose concentration. My "sparring partner" in the games quickly pointed out that I was not going to hit the target in front of me if I kept looking over my shoulder to see where my line was :z7 This will obviously be the case on the river too, when I have trees etc behind me ....... yes I need to work on this :z17

Great stuff

Another well received gathering,

Thanks Ben and Paul for pointing out two areas of concern in my casting which I will be working on.

Well done Mike for organising the event and The 'Ringmaster' for organising the games.

It was good to see Camerons' friend Martyn benefitting from the tuition available - I wish I could have been exposed to this extensive expertise when I was starting out.

another success.

Can't wait to get outside again.

No it's not a ferret it's a length of fluffy yarn that substitutes for the fly line on Ben's wee indoor casing rod. It is not easy to cast with, believe me :grin

Many thanks to Mike for arranging the hire of the Hall and to Peter and Kevin for arranging the obstacle course and to Ben for his patience with me. I came home with a list of things to work on. I also made the mistake of trying a few different rods and I rather liked one or two. Hmmm :z13

Clark,

sorry to hear about your rod. :cry     Were you being a little over-zealous with the rod? you can tell me.

I can't really say that I get stuck on bottom very much but if I ever to I'd be inclined to lose the rod, grab the line and 'straight line' pull against the stuck fly (possibly from a couple of angles) this will either release the fly or snap the leader.

If the fly does release then I'd check the gape and point.

Should have went to 'the outcasts' event!

Take it easy

Hi Mike!

Thank you, looks like a nice place you got here! Many familiar names too.

Our hall is very long but the ceeling is a bit lower than in your hall. Then thereīs all kinds of shit hanging from the roof, cables, lamps and we constantly need to clear it from ropes and wires hanging down. The hall is being used for fairs and the like so they hang up signs and I donīt know what from the ceeling.

But when you find a clear lane and manage to keep the line in it itīs a wondeful place to spend a cold winters day.  :grin

Tomorrow is the big day of the week btw. Got all the lines cleaned and I hope I still have some juice left in the arms, been painting walls and cooking all day...

Best regards

Hi Harri!

Thanks! Kitos?

Hi Sandy!

Thanks!! We casted some in Dunkeld right? Itīs going to be great to come back to Scotland in May and meet all of you!

Hi Magnus!

Yepp!! Do you cook? I'd say for tandoori marinating moose beats any lamb hands down. Itīs not conventional I know, but the quality of the meat I got hold off is just exceptional. I bought a half moose calve a few months ago, a well tendered yearling. Get that taste of the wild to clash with the hebs and spices of indian cousine and you got something really special. If you do cook I could write down the recepie for making Moose Tandoori Madras, it will blow your socks off.  :z12

Oh yeah, nearly forgot! We had a great day in the hall. I could not do any real distance today, that painting and sanding had turned my arms to yelly. But I did a lot of precision and presentation stuff, it went resonable well.

The guys I train with are getting so damn good, I swear it took me more than 15 years of mad practise to learn to cast like one of the guys that started training with us last fall. The whole group are good casters but this guy has an unbelivable talent. He popped a couple of +115 ft casts with the 5wt the last time. WTH, with only 5-6 months of practice.

Best Regards

Have you tried using game for Tandoori?

And do you use celery in your Madras and Vindaloo?

This is not OT, Itīs all related to flyfishing anyway. A proper curry makes you cast better.  :wink

Hi Hamish!

Great! I expect your Vension to be pretty close to our moose in taste.

Celeriac is great, I use it a lot. You should really have a go with celery. For anything with tomato in itīs the bomb. And carrot naturally.

Also, I got some special russian mustard powder that I use for the Vindaloo. I will bring some to you.

There is a brand of canned cherry tomatoes here that is absolutely great. Do you use anything like that?

Hi Hamish!

Got a a full bag for you here (of that mustard powder). One of my collegues at work is Russian. Promise me that you will not try smelling this stuff. Colemans is a good, strong mustard powder, this is something else... :!

See if I get it through customs. Last time in Scotland I got a few zipper bags of curry from Al Pyke and that nearly cost my virginity, I am not kidding. But his Biriani mix changed my cooking, outstanding stuff!

Hi Guys!

Today we casted for four hours in the hall. What a day!!! Fredrik popped two PB:s with the 5wt and I hit one with the 8 footer for a 5.

So we walsed in there and begun to warm up. Fredrik and his brother marched right up to the center court and begun whipping distance. The third cast Fredrik made was 35,6 meters, he had docens going over 34. Popped another one way over 35 meters after a while. Jesus, where is this going to end?  :shock   :grin

We also did all kinds of curves, mends, spey, precision and helped each other with tracking. Hall practise is so great guys!

Best Regards
Stefan

Hi Mike and all!

I had my first proper outdoor session yesterday. I've been out in the snow about once a week of course during the whole winter but only very short sessions, and you canīt hardly see anything in the fecking darkness. Casting with gloves on is not that fun either.  :grin

However, itīs wonderful to be able to get outside properly now. The 6 wt is singing, I have learned a lot this winter. I think the best thing I did was force myself to cast without hauling for a couple of months. Try it, hand in pocket and line reeled up. It's a bit awkvard in the beginning but it improves the basics fast.

Best regards
Stefan
